In college, or really anytime in your life, it can be challenging to set aside time with God. As a perfectionist and workaholic, I’m definitely guilty of putting my relationship with God on the back burner while I spend my evenings studying, writing papers, and working on Odyssey stuff. I think to myself, “God will understand because he knows I’m really busy.”
The thing is, you’re never too busy for God.
Even when if you’re spending your days running around like a chicken with its head cut off, you still have time to talk to God. You still have time to read the Bible. Its when you’re the busiest and the most stressed that you need to spend time with God the most.
Spending just a little bit of your day reading your Bible, writing in a devotional, listening to a Christian podcast, or watching a sermon online will literally transform your day. You have to feed your spirit by spending time with the Lord.
For the past week, my schoolwork seems to have buried me alive. I fell out of my daily routine of doing my devotional and reading the Bible in the morning. I've been incredibly stressed, and while yes, that probably has a lot to do with my approaching deadlines, I think it also has a lot to do with the fact that I wasn’t asking God for help.
Here’s the thing, God doesn’t want me to be this stressed.
Perfectionism is something that I struggle with and I’ve noticed that it’s the number one thing that distracts me from God. I fixate on deadlines, to-do lists, and planning and forget that God is in control. He doesn’t want me to fail. He just wants me to take time aside every day to tell him what’s up.
Taking a break from your busy day to talk to God isn’t going to set you off schedule. In fact, God will probably make you more productive throughout the day because he will ease your stress and worries.
My favorite bible verse is 1 Peter 5:7. It says, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” By doing this, you’d be surprised how drastically your day will improve. Talking to God isn’t a chore, it should be something you look forward to.
