Spelhouse Homecoming Survival Guide

Oct. 19-24 are going to be the days of missed classes, long nights, and amazing concerts. Wale and Fabolous will be our hip-hop concert performers, where Chrisette Michelle will slow it down with our Neo-Soul Concert. There's no shame, where we have all been there at least once. Spelman and Morehouse are known for having one of the best Homecoming weeks in the country for a reason.

But many times, we have been put in rough situations, academically and recreationally due to homecoming season.

But what shall we do? How can we overcome those rough spots without going left? Due to my experiences during homecoming, I am here to share some very valuable tips on how to survive Spelhouse Homecoming 2015.

Finish all of your assignments, now.

Many of our professors do not understand the excitement and fun of homecoming, therefore, we may have an assignment due Oct. 22 or sometime during homecoming week. Students may seem to push it off till the Thursday before homecoming, or maybe even homecoming week.

This is not the time to be the Procrastinating Queen.

If your professors are like mine, you will more than likely receive a zero for your assignment, and worst case, you can not make it up.

Do NOT be "that" girl or "that" guy.

Must I say more?

Policemen know what time it is, and trust me, they will be everywhere you're trying to go to have some fun. Be careful! Homecoming is that time to enjoy yourself, connect with the ones that have graduated that you may miss, and enjoy good times with great people. But sometimes, people have way to much fun and they end up passed out on the floor or even in the hospital.

Basically, all the attention is on you, and no one will ever forget what happened.

DO NOT WEAR A DRESS OR HEELS TO ANY PARTY (except Coronation ball).

At this point, safety is the biggest concern. Ladies love to dance, and men love to dance with you. But remember, dresses do not stay in place and no one wants to hear you screaming and yelling because everyone saw your dress come up.

Get yourself a nice jumpsuit or romper, and always remember comfort. Wearing heels to a party that you will be standing up the entire time in is not comfortable at all.

Personally, I find it funny to see you ladies take the shoes off at the party, when the whole point was to wear them there.

Be mindful of surprise room checks.

It gets real during homecoming, your Resident Director is very aware that there may be some things hiding in your room. Trust me, they are not afraid to find them and take them for their own personal enjoyment.

All of a sudden you have lost your housing due to illegal substances in your room. It happens every year, and it is embarrassing to have to tell your parents what happened.

Enjoy yourself!

There is so much going on at homecoming, you do not ever want to miss out. Go to every event, party, and don't ever stop being the fun college student you are. You only have four years to be this way, so enjoy every minute of it.

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?

For the average 20-something, life moves pretty fast. You’ve got classes, friends, relationships, jobs, family, and whatever else we overcommit ourselves with. I probably should have learned to say no to adding more to my schedule a long time ago, but instead here are 11 things that can be more helpful than coffee.

Resting b***h face. Defined as a person, usually a girl, who naturally looks mean when her face is expressionless, without meaning to. Many of you suffer from this "condition." You are commonly asked what's wrong, when nothing is. What people don't know is that is just your facial expression. Here are some things they wish you knew.
