Spoken word poetry is one of my favorite genres to explore. It holds a sense of beauty and power that is difficult to find anywhere. I want to take a second to share this beauty with you all, and so here are my top five favorite spoken word pieces.
1. Blue Blanket by: Andrea Gibson
A very visceral and powerful commentary on one of the worst crimes that continues to go unpunished.
2. Death to Van Gogh's Ear by: Allen Ginsburg
Something written in the mid-1900's, and yet still more relevant now than ever before.
3. Coded Language by: Saul Williams
All that needs to be said is a quote from the poem itself:
"We do hereby declare reality unkempt by the changing standards of dialogue."
4. What Teachers Make by: Taylor Mali
This poem does an excellent job of describing the most important job that continues to go unappreciated.
5. Line in the Sand by: Kate Tempest
"So go seek out them demons that clutch you/Embrace them/And turn them into angels with patience and passion."
