Sparrow Pond's Haunted Hayride in the Pouring Rain

I can't help but react when someone gets too close to scare me.

There was a benefit at Sparrow Pond, I don't remember for who, but it was a pretty big one. We only knew a few people there, for the massive amount of people that showed up. Everyone was gathered at tables, and a slideshow of a man and his family played on a humongous white screen, playing from a projector. It was fall and pretty close to Halloween. If you're familiar with this area, then you'd know that Sparrow Pond puts together a haunted hayride for Halloween, and if you didn't now you do. Anyways, people were riding the hayride, and you could hear the screams of people from afar. I'm a big scaredy cat, not even sugar coating it. So, I do admit I usually do not like anything remotely scary, but then I saw little kids getting off of the ride. I thought to myself "Hey, it can't be that bad if little kids are going on it, right?" I decided to go on the hayride.

So I grab one of the only girls I knew at that benefit and tell her we are going on the ride together. We head straight for the door, but then it begins to pour. The rain is super cold, and the wind is blowing really hard. After about 30 seconds of trying to convince ourselves it'll stop, we decide to go sit back down at a table. We sit at the table for what seems like forever, but probably only about 10 minutes. The rain is still gushing from the sky, so we head over to the arcade.

By the arcade a bunch of boys were playing pool. They seemed about our age, but we didn't want to ask. My friend and I started playing the claw machine when one of the boys walked up to us and asked us if we've been on the hayride yet. We said no...he called us chickens, so we marched straight on the ride, in the pouring rain, cold pouring rain.

I grabbed a big umbrella, and my friend and I sit on the hay bales covered in plastic. We sank into the cold plastic like an awkward deep sitting couch. My friend told me we needed to annoying the boys that were sitting next to us, since they were so rude we would return the favor. We decided to scream as loud as possible, even if we weren't really that scared, but let's face it...I'd probably be that scared anyways.

The ride started, and people ran beside the wagon to scare everyone. Now, the people were not allowed to touch the passengers, so the passengers weren't allowed to touch them, which is respectable, until someone gets too close. The rain kept pouring down, and the the wagon took a trail into the woods. We heard a car in the wood turn on, and chainsaws up ahead. I was holding the umbrella with a pretty tight grip because the wind blowing pretty hard. The wagon was driving by huge, jacked guys with chainsaws, and they were waving them around. One of them got too close to my friend's bubble, so I did what any reasonable person would do by reflex of course; I hit him with my big heavy umbrella.

After I did the woman who was operating the ride made to announcement that "Please do not hit the actors. You will be escorted off the ride!" We all couldn't help but laugh, even the boys. I made people laugh in a kind of scary situation. The ride carried on, and my friend and I continued to screamed the loudest because we wanted to. The ride came to an end, and we jumped off the wagon. We were completely soaked from the rain. The rain water had made puddles on the plastic cover on the hay bales, so we were basically sitting in puddles.

As my friend and I got off the ride the group of boys told us we were loud and we just looked at them and said "We know," and walked away. We had so much fun, but we both agreed that next time she'd hold the umbrella to avoid anyone else getting hit. We spent the next 20 minutes trying to dry underneath the bathroom hand dryers. When my friend and I went back to the arcade the boys didn't both us again.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
