Stress. A part of college, work, and everyday life. Whether you are taking 18 hours a semester, working two jobs, or have a family to take care of, stress can take over your life, leaving you drained of energy and feeling less of yourself.
When I hear people discuss self-care, they talk about making time to do things that make them feel good. I've been told to read a book, exercise, or wear comfy clothes to get back in touch with myself and distress. But recently I had the opportunity to have a spa day. Not just giving myself a bad manicure, but a real spa day.
I wrapped myself in a plush cotton robe with a cup of strawberry and mint infused water, thinking that this was the height of luxury. I was wrong. Upon my arrival, I was given a red ribbon and was asked to tie a knot in the ribbon for each of the things that I currently stress about, and at the end of my time there, I would place it in a basket of other ribbons, leaving my troubles behind me. I knotted the ribbon four times and placed it in the wooden basket, feeling slightly better about my stresses.
Getting a massage and a facial was the stress reliever I didn't know I needed. Preparing to move back to college as a Community Leader excites me so much, but prep work and packing caused me an anxiety that took away from the experience. For a few hours, I allowed my mind to empty of thoughts of things I may forget to pack or the things I still need to do before moving back to Baylor. Focusing on the moment, my breathing, and soft music allowed me to let go of my worries. Getting in touch with my self and my skin's needs were essential, not luxuries.
But spa days can become expensive, and I understand that not everyone has the money, time or access to a spa. I certainly don't have a budget that allows for a regular visit to a spa. But taking care of your body is a must. Take time to do a face mask, massage your temples, and play some relaxing music on Spotify while laying down on your bed is a great way day to have a spa day in the comfort of your own home. Ask a close friend to give you a massage, and while you're at it, give them one too.
You can't take care of your responsibilities and other people without taking care of yourself. I can't solve any problems without addressing my body's needs. Drinking more water, exercising, and eating better can do wonders for you, but there is nothing like treating yourself to a facial. Get in touch with yourself, focus on you, and de-stress by giving yourself a spa day, whether it be in a five-star spa or at home.
