If you are a Georgia Southern student, you know that tradition lives on this campus. From Freedom's Flight to Watermelon Cutting, the traditions continue to attract students, faculty and alumni. Of these, Sweetheart Circle is known as one of the most treasured traditions.
With pecan, pine and palm trees, Sweetheart Circle is the perfect spot for a sunny afternoon picnic. Even in the winter, the center of Georgia Southern's campus is the main attraction. White lights across the administration buildings, lamp posts and tree trunks bring holiday cheer when people gather to watch them brighten the circle as President Keel flips a single switch.Â
In the spring, the green grass and cobblestone walkway through the center make for picturesque graduation photos and -- yes, you guessed it -- proposals.Â
Perhaps the greatest aspect of Sweetheart Circle is the legend behind it. It is believed that if you and your sweetheart walk around the circle three times, then the two of you will get married one day.
It is the small stories and traditions of the University that I believe make over 21,000 students fall in love with the school on the first visit to Statesboro, GA. Whether we are taking selfies with GUS, decorating our organization's float for an epic homecoming week, or yelling "One more time!" in the prettiest little stadium in America, Georgia Southern gives us the memories you simply cannot find at any other university.
So for all of you that hope to marry your sweetheart -- start walking!
