It's A Southern Thing

You might be a southerner if this sounds familiar.

I was born and raised in the South — the great state of Georgia, to be exact. Even in the 21st century, there's still a lot of things that ring true for the south and all of the people that reside in it. Here's just a few:

1. Always use your manners.

If the person is older than you, even if just by a few years, you always say "yes ma'am" or "yes sir." If someone does even the smallest thing for you, you should always give a sincere "thank you." Never reply "nope," "yeah," "I don't care," or "whatever" to an adult unless you want a good southern serving of sass.

2. Expect a gentleman.

If a boy doesn't hold the door open for you and treat you with the utmost respect, that's a problem. In the south, boys are raised to treat a girl well and girls are raised to settle for nothing less. Chivalry is not dead; you just have to wait for the right guy.

3. There's only one kind of tea.

Waiters know if you order tea, you mean sweet, iced tea. Go to the north and ask for tea and they'll give you unsweet nastiness. We don't play around when it comes to sweet tea down here.

4. If it's not moving, monogram it.

I pretty much live by this rule and I'm fine with it.

5. Pearls go with anything.

I think I wear my pearl earrings 350 days out of the year. If I'm wearing a t-shirt and Nike shorts, I'm still wearing my pearls. It a staple item for southern girls.

6. Simply Southern, Lily Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines are all pretty common.

Every true southern girl has at least a few of these.

7. Dressing up is not a chore.

Getting fancy every now and then is fun. But don't get me wrong, I still love big t-shirts.

8. Curls for days.

Whether you're going to a wedding or going to lunch with a friend, you can bet that we'll take any chance we can get to curl our hair.

9. Always have your toenails painted.

It's just an unspoken rule that a girl should always have her toenails painted if she's wearing sandals.

10. Saturdays in the fall are for football.

We don't care about professional football down here. It's all about some college ball on cool Saturdays. (GO DAWGS!)

11. Stay classy.

Gossip isn't cool, and being a slob is never okay. Show respect for yourself.

12. Learn to cook, and cook well.

We take food very seriously, so learn to cook good, southern food. Momma always said the way to a man's heart is through his stomach.

13. Always write a thank you note.

People in the south will thank you for thanking them. We take our manners very seriously. (Refer back to #1.)

This is just the beginning of a long list of reasons the south is so great. I hope to always stay in the south, but even if you take this girl out of the south, you can never take the south out of this girl. I'm just your basic southern girl living in this crazy world, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
