7 Things You've Said If You're A SoCal Native Living Out Of State This Winter

We're in the final stretch of winter in Washington. After months of 20-30 degree weather, lots of freezing rain, and a bit of snow, I've come to the realization that growing up in Southern California really spoiled me as far as winters go. I'm used to sunny, warm winters where the temperature doesn't drop below 60. Having gone from that to the freezing winter in Washington, I've found myself saying some things about it throughout the winter months.

1. "Where's the sun?!"

I feel like I haven't seen the sun in years. It's just been clouds and rain and more clouds. It's definitely made me miss the sunny days from Southern California.

2. "How can it possibly be this cold?!"

I've reached a new understanding of what "cold" is this winter. Having to walk across campus in 30-degree weather with pouring rain and wind? Yeah, I was basically an icicle after that.

3. "It's snowing!!"

It's impossible not to feel excited the first time it snows. There's the chance for classes to be canceled, the world looks so pretty, and it makes everything so cozy.

4. "Wait, how do I drive in the snow."

Then the reality of snow sinks in. There's nothing scarier than when you're driving and your car slips on a patch of ice or snow. I basically avoid driving in the snow at all costs now.

5. "I need more blankets."

I've found myself on more than one occasion this year buried under a mountain of blankets. And it's honestly the best experience.

6. "I can't get warm!"

Layers upon layers on, heater on, drinking something hot and still shivering. Sometimes the chill just slips in and it's impossible to get away from.

7. "Is spring here yet?"

Daydreaming of spring is definitely what is getting me through this long winter months. That and imagining I'm back in Southern California under the sun.

Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
