Remember the days when we thought owning a DVD player was the next upscale step towards technology? At the time, the usage of slim disks to feature our favorite films was much easier to manipulate and travel with, than the original, wide VCR tapes. 3-Dimensional films premiering in theaters, when using specific lenses, aided in the visual entertainment of film releases. Knowing that we could “touch” a shooting star or characters in the film was a big step forward for the cinema business. However, South Korea has begun to create 4DX films, which still includes the 3-Dimnesional effect on films, along with physical effects created by the theater, in order to make the audience feel as if they are in the movie.
The first 4DX movie theater in NYC is found within The Regal Cinemas in Union Square. Taking five years to finally take effect in New York City, this new technology allows the theater to come to life. Between shaking seats, wind blowing, and light effects with smoke, the hope is for cinemas to make more profit since the purchasing of movie tickets has declined. Although movie tickets will increase because of the special effects, will customers enjoy these new features? Or will the extra effects take away from the graphics of the movie?
We are soon to find out as more theaters continue to open in 2016!
