Olivia Rodrigo just released her debut album 'Sour' on May 21st and it is safe to say that as of its release it is a huge hit. If you have been anywhere on the internet since then I am sure you have heard at least something about this. The eighteen-year-old singer-songwriter put together eleven songs that are just purely amazing. This album no doubt is based around a breakup, however, it feels like much more than that. These songs are able to relate to people on so many different levels.
I have been listening to this album nonstop since it came out. Whenever I am driving in the car it is on, when I am listening to music to get work done it's on. Each day I listen to it, I find myself having a new favorite song. Depending on my mood it could be 'jealousy, jealousy' or it could be 'favorite crime' but all the songs are amazing. I have never met a true "no skip album" until now. You can also feel the inspirations for the different songs. Like how 'good 4 u' has major Paramore 'Misery Business' vibes and, '1 step forward, 3 steps back' feels very new Taylor Swift. It also happens that Swift co-wrote that song with Rodrigo.
'Driver's license' and 'deja vu' came out a bit before the album was released and the internet already lost their minds over them, and yes, they are still amazing songs but they are not my top two on the album. I would say 'good 4 u,' 'enough for you,' and 'favorite crime' are my top three. When I listen to 'good 4 u' I just cannot help but scream it at the top of my lungs. Then when it comes to 'enough for you' and 'favorite crime' the lyrics that Rodrigo wrote just hit a little too close to home yet the songs are so beautiful that it is okay that I am sad listening to them. The song 'brutal' is first on the album and starts the album off with a bang! Olivia starts her album out with almost an upbeat rock feel that I jam out to very often. The second song on the album 'traitor' stands out as well, once again another beautifully written song that is so gutwrenching yet gorgeous when you listen to it.
It's really hard to say anything negative about this album, I usually wouldn't love having an album filled with 'hope ur ok' and 'happier' but, Rodrigo makes it work. The songwriting is so great and the songs are just so relatable to so many different situations.
