In my Media Industries and Trends class, this semester we talk about all the different ways technology has changed the different forms of media, one of them being music. Music used to be only listened to live or on the radio but has now transformed into downloads and streams online. I remember the days of having an iPod Nano and buying all my music on iTunes, but now I don't remember the last time I downloaded or paid for a song to be on my phone. My free music streaming service today is definitely Spotify. I listen to it every day and love all of the different "mood" or "genre" playlists, and especially love creating my own. The free wide variety of songs makes up for the fact that I've had to say "sorry I don't have Spotify premium" every time I'm playing music out loud. The best thing about Spotify is all of the different playlists for all different occasions; here are some of my most listened to.
Discover Weekly
Every Monday Spotify refreshes your own personal "Discover Weekly" playlist with 30 songs picked specifically from what they think is your taste in music based on songs you've saved and listen to. Each Monday is either a hit or a miss when it comes to the content. I usually finish the playlist throughout the week and find at least a couple of songs that I really like, sometimes they even become really popular such as "All Time Low" by Jon Bellion and "Sex" by Cheat Codes. Because the songs on discover weekly are meant for you to discover less popular, less on the radar songs you can also claim that you discovered a hit before everyone else did!
Study Break
Even though the title of this playlist is "Study Break" I really only listen to it while I'm in the library studying and doing homework. They aren't all very calm songs so they keep you in a good mood while you're doing work that would normally stress you out. The songs on this playlist are pretty popular and include artists like Ed Sheeran and one of my personal favorites The Chainsmokers.
Good Vibes
I've been listening to this playlist pretty religiously for the past two weeks and probably have the order of songs memorized by now. Since the snow has melted and the sun has started to come out this playlist has been great to lift my mood while drowning in homework and has helped me enjoy every moment a little bit more. A good thing about this playlist is that the songs update every once in a while so you don't get tired of it but still have the same "vibes" while listening.
Rap Caviar
The name of this playlist is self-explanatory. Here you'll find the best of A$AP Rocky, 2 Chainz, Future, Migos, and Chance. This playlist is another that updates and adds new songs about once a week. Personally, this is one of the playlists that I like to work out to that helps me boost my effort at the gym when I get tired of EDM or the stereotypical work-out playlist which is listed below.
My High-Intensity Workout
This playlist sponsored by Gatorade has you fill out your music preferences and makes a personal workout playlist for you that they update every week or so, you can also choose the length of the playlist for how long you usually spend at the gym.
All The Feels
I love this playlist to just lay in bed alone and relax to or play while hanging around with a friend. This features some of my favorite artists like G-Eazy, Frank Ocean, The Weekend, J Cole, and of course Chance. Slow hits for a good time? (10/10 would recommend Spotify premium for listening to this with anyone more than a friend).
Hope ya enjoyed this article and have been inspired to listen to some decent music, also thanks to Chance the Rapper for allowing us to listen to his music for free, if you read this Chance I love you, Syracuse was great, proud of you for the Grammys. I'll let you guys know if I ever give up and invest in Spotify Premium, but in the meantime follow me on Spotify to listen to my personal playlists such as "Summer Sixteen", "Train Songs", "2nd Sem", and "802".
