Soundtrack to My Life

October 7th, 2019

Every free moment I have I spend it listening to music, wether it's my classic rock essentials that I loved since I can remember, or new music from a variety of artists with different sounds and messages. It would be nearly impossible to add in every song that's effected me in my short 18 years of life, but here are a few of my favorite songs that will stay close to my heart forever.

Soundtrack to My Life

Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac.

Being the worlds biggest Stevie Nicks fan, there may be some bias in this statement but, 'Silver Springs' off of Fleetwood Macs "Rumors" 1977 album is one of the most overlooked, powerful, and soul shaking heartbreak songs of the century.

Ode to Viceroy by Mac DeMarco.

My attraction to Mac's music stems from his originality and unique style. Throughout every album there's diversity as he creates basically his own genre of music, merging surf rock with guitar infused blues. Ode to Viceroy is such a beautiful and strong piece of music and accurately shows DeMarco's talents as a musician.

Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks.

This song brings out so many emotions, its almost poetic. The nostalgic light flow can be enjoyed in every way. Lead Vocalist Ray Davies described this piece "like an extract from a diary nobody was allowed to read". A perfect song to end a summer night, beautiful and melancholy all at once.

One of These Nights by Eagles.

This song of lusty ambiance includes rich instrumental tunes from Don Henley and is a laid back uplifting song of little depth. Wether you're in the car, on the beach, or with your friends, this songs tune brings classic rock fans like myself together.

Friend of the Devil by Grateful Dead.

While the entire 'American Beauty' album was life changing, this song was the one that has stayed with me years after hearing it for the first time. This country piece is easy to listen to and is upbeat compared to a majority of the Dead's slower and more instrumental pieces.

It Ain't Me Babe by Joan Baez.

Although this calming folk song was originally sang by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez gives a whole new perspective coming from a woman. I have always loved this song when I heard it on Dylan's track, but the unpopular truth is expressed through Baez's version- that a woman could actually not need a man. For the 60's, this was a landmark in female empowerment and we stan.

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.

Everyone with a good taste in music loves this song, being that the lyrics are so poetic that they can be interpreted differently to each person. For me, this song will always be one of my favorite songs of all time. The story Stevie Nicks tells of the path of life and growth, and feeling stuck or pummeled by an expectation from yourself of the person you have to be and holding onto the things in the past that made you happy. This song of growth and struggle is so powerful and makes you feel not alone with these unexplainable feelings of getting older.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
