I recently bought the soundtrack to the acclaimed Japanese role-playing game "Final Fantasy VII." Though having never actually played the game myself, I've been captivated by its music, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, ever since I first heard it. From the arpeggio of "Prelude" to the medley of "Staff Roll," this soundtrack is filled with wonderful, magical tunes. Here are a few highlights from the soundtrack that I believe make it a worthwhile listen.
1. "Prelude"
Though not original to the game, having been a series staple since the release of "Final Fantasy," the prelude to "Final Fantasy VII" is probably the best version around. The synthesized sound of the keyboard overlapped with a sweet, melancholy melody sucks you right into the fantastical world of "Final Fantasy."
2. "Opening - Bombing Mission"
This phenomenal track plays during the opening cut scene when some of the main characters are introduced. The first part, "Opening," starts with foreboding chords played by synthesized strings and keyboard, along with pounding drums signifying the intensity of the setting. This slowly builds into a somber but adventurous melody. This leads into the second part, "Bombing Mission," with driving, forceful instruments that set the tone for the first moments of the game.
3. "Let the Battles Begin!"
This is the first of several battle themes in the game. Each portion of the track has an intensity that fluctuates, keeping you on the edge of your toes as you fight.
4. "Fight On!"
Another battle theme, this one plays during the boss fights. As opposed to "Let the Battles Begin," this track cranks up the intensity with a powerful guitar melody in the beginning leading to jumbled drums and synthesizers, getting you more excited to progress through the game.
5. "Cait Sith's Theme"
Cait Sith is a party member introduced partway through the game. He is a robotic cat who sits atop a robotic creature called a Moogle. He's clearly a mysterious character, and this theme encapsulates that perfectly. The track has a jazz feel with subtle snapping and organs that pique curiosity about the character.
6. "Aerith's Theme"
One of the most well-known pieces by Nobuo Uematsu to date, this serves as the theme for the main character's love interest. It predominantly plays during a key cut scene (unmentioned due to spoilers) where it leaves a profound, emotional impact with its somber tone and flowing melody.
7. "One-Winged Angel"
Finally, we have the final boss theme, no pun intended. This track is just all over the place, changing melodies constantly with different instruments such as guitars and horns and adding in a Latin choir for good measure. The translated lyrics describe the intense anger and pride that dwells within the main antagonist, Sephiroth. This is a fitting song for one of the series most well-known villains.
I hope you all enjoy this soundtrack as much as I do!
