Fall is my favorite time of the year. From much needed cooler weather to a regaining sense of normalcy as classes are called back into session, it's a very peaceful time of year. As summer comes to an end, I wanted to celebrate by writing about the top five albums everyone needs on their fall playlists.
1. Type O Negative- "October Rust" (1996)
The Brooklyn based rock/goth/metal outfit are without a doubt the epitome of fall. Though many fans would agree that their quintessential album "Bloody Kisses" (1993) encompasses the very spirit of fall specifically of Halloween (listen to "Black No. 1" and you'll see what I mean), their 1996 follow up also holds a very autumn like atmosphere. However, in contrast to "Bloody Kisses", which is a dark and, dare I say it, a typical goth album filled with gloom and doom, October Rust is more melancholic rather than doomy (and there is a difference!)
I would highly recommend listening to this album all the way through because every song is dreamy goth perfection and many songs, such as the iconic "Love You to Death," and "Haunted," range from seven to eleven minutes, which makes it a great album when trying to fall asleep!
2. Chelsea Wolfe- "Abyss" (2015)
The two year follow up to 2013's "Pain is Beauty", Chelsea Wolfe brings forth an album that is dreamy, melancholic, and simply enchanting. From the raw and feral "Iron Moon," to the ominous "Color of Blood," this album is a must for any fall playlist, as it is calm and gentle, as well as cool; much like the autumn weather.
3. Carach Angren- "Where the Corpses Sink Forever" (2012)
A concept album about World War II and Vietnam, Dutch symphonic black metal band Carach Angren combines the raw power of black metal and the gentleness of classical to bring an album that is beautifully haunting. This unique combination can best be experienced in "The Funerary Dirge of a Violinist," which tells the story a solider in the midst of battle battling the trauma and devastation that surrounds him. In all, this album has something for everyone- whether they be history nerds, metalheads, and classical music fans (I just happen to be all three)
I also highly recommend listening to this album on a rainy fall night.
4. King Dude- "Songs of Flesh and Blood" (2015)
The best way I can describe King Dude is "blues country doom." King Dude's sound is unique simply because it encompasses a fluidity between doom folk, blues and country. This album in particular reminds me of fall because in songs such as "Silver Crucifix," and "I Don't Want to Dream Anymore," there is a cold atmosphere- of that of forlorn and heartache. Simply put, this album is great for a warm bath on a cool, cloudy day.
5. Satyricon- "Live At the Opera" (2015)
In contrary to what some metal fans may believe, opera and metal make a beautiful combination. In 2015, Norwegian black metal band Satyricon released a live CD/DVD of them performing with the Norwegian National Opera Chorus and it is simply divine. There is just something about the juxtaposition between light and heavy that really draws one in and it is a definite must for any fall playlist. Such songs that are performed are "Mother North," and "Our World It Rumbles Tonight."
