Oftentimes I open up Facebook in the mornings on the way to class just to check statuses and see if there is anything new going on among my friends and family. More often than not I have seen statuses with homophones used incorrectly. Seriously their, there, and they're are three very different words with totally different meanings, they just sound the same. Here are some examples and the correct way of using them:
1. Their, There, and They're
Their: I am going to their house.
There: I just came from there.
They're: They're not very friendly.
2. Two, To, Too
Two: I will take two cookies.
To: I am going to the movies.
Too: I want to go to the park too.
3. No, Know
No: I have no experience in rock climbing.
Know: I do not know why this keeps happening.
4. Your, You're
Your: What is your name?
You're: You're are honestly on my nerves.
See how that works? Those are just some examples of some of the mistakes I see very often on social media. For me as an English major and a writer I find it hard to skip over the mistakes and keep moving. Majority of the time I want to comment the correct spelling in their comment section, but I decided that it would be best to keep scrolling instead. The real question here is if they knew the proper homophone to use or if they honestly did not know. Was it a play on words or did you not know that the word you used has an entirely different meaning?
