I think it’s pretty safe to say often times it seems we are ruled by our emotions. Isn’t it crazy to just stop for a moment and think about a time you felt like you were drowning in anxiety, stress, sadness, hopelessness, or any feeling, really. When you’re in the state where you feel like you are unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s unreal how intense your emotions are and how much of an influence they have on your thoughts. It’s extremely difficult when you are in such a state to think your situation could get any better, and even praying to God sometimes seems useless because you can’t feel Him.
What if I said you should discard the way you feel, scrap it altogether? You would potentially laugh in my face because that’s such a difficult task. But I’m being serious. Both feelings and emotions are at times beautiful things, but they're also weapons used by the devil to trick and betray you. Your feelings can lead you to believe things that are not true about yourself or other people. When your feelings get involved, it becomes more about you and not about God. So, to go back to when I said scrap the feelings, what are you supposed to do? You are supposed to stop letting your feelings and emotions rule you. Stop living by what you "feel" and start living by God’s word. Believe that His word is truer than the feelings you feel.
When you feel your emotions rising, and you are reacting to situations from the way you feel, I encourage you to grab your Bible and research how God would have you handle the situation or how God tells you to deal with the feelings and/or emotions you are experiencing. When you are able to not live for yourself and your own emotions, you start living by God’s word, and then you will be living a life with soul purpose.
