Taylor Swift: Victimized or Playing the Victim?

5
Sorry Taylor, You've Been Exposed.

Let me begin by saying I have always been a Taylor Swift fan. "Teardrops On My Guitar" or "You Belong With Me" were some of my go-to songs back in the day, and I have even been to a concert or two.

However, I am a bit disgusted by the person I have watched her become.

Taylor Swift has always been an artist that knows exactly how I feel and perfectly assimilates it into her lyrics. I have always been empathetic to her love life, feeling as if heartbreak and struggle meant the same thing for me as it did to her.

Nevertheless, her fearless attitude and honesty has proven to be nothing but an act.

The entire feud between Kanye West and Taylor Swift has always been a controversial topic. Obviously when Kayne grabbed the mic from Taylor at the MTV Music Awards in September of 2009, it was horrific for poor Taylor. But was her sadness and embarrassment authentic, or part of what will now be an intense PR stunt since 2009?

After hearing Kanye West's song "Famous", I knew there would be some drama on Taylor's end. Needless to say, I never knew Taylor was in on the entire thing.

Although Taylor denied giving her stamp of approval to the derogatory lyrics, she was soon exposed on Kim Kardashian's Snapchat in a recorded phone call, telling Kanye that she considers the line "a compliment" and to "go with whatever line you think is better".

I have always sympathized with Taylor Swift. I have found comfort in her lyrics, and appreciate her honesty towards heartbreak and the minds of young women. However, this whole mess has led me to believe I am done trusting Taylor Swift.

Celebrities obviously put on a facade for fans, but I never categorized Taylor Swift as anything less than credible. I have advocated for her cause, and she lied to the public on lyrics she was well aware of from the start.

Taylor Swift's failed attempt at some sort of PR stunt has made her lose all authenticity in my eyes.

Although Taylor claims to have never approved the lyric where Kanye calls her "that bitch", her enthusiasm and support for the line "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex" was enough to prove that she knew what the song was about.

As a pervious fan of Taylor Swift (and someone who has tried very hard to see both sides of this never-ending feud), I have come to the conclusion that Taylor is far from being victimized. Rather, she is twisting the situation in her favor so she can once again receive sympathy from the outside world.

I would've respected Taylor if she had come out and told her side of things, and tried to give her honest recollection of the way things went down, but now that she's lied to the world, she has lost my respect, and my willingness to see it from her end.

At the end of the day, I more upset that a celebrity that I found honest and relatable has shown to be a little shady in a conflict with Kanye West that she has "endured" for quite some time. I just hope she can find her way again, we miss the old Taylor Swift.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
