An apology from the boy you helped
My Younger Years
I was just a kid when I met you for the first time. And might we all say I was lucky that you spoke to me that evening. I was doing what I always did, playing basketball, running as fast as I could, and always being as active as I could be but coach, the day you saw me playing in the park as a young boy you asked me a simple question "why don't you play any sports?" I responded the best I could "Well Sir my mom and I don't have any money." your reply "I will pay for it."
Sorry Coach
The excitement was overwhelming to know that I finally got to play in a game and people were going to cheer for me instead of pickup games in the park.
I got to play sports because of you coach.. because of you, I got to play basketball. I got to play football and I got to run as fast as I could.
Practice rolled around and a habit but I jumped right into practice and worked as hard as I could. I always felt bad because you never had to help me play sports and I tried to hurry to practices but I could never help the reason why I was always late.
"Why are you late to my practices boy, this is becoming a habit?" Coach asked
"My mom and I don't have a car so I have to walk here every day." I explained
"That is fine, I will pick you up." Coach responded.
Sorry Coach
Years later I was now in High School, things had not changed I still got picked up for practice and my mom and I still had no money but you still helped me be able to play and get to practice.
In basketball I was always the seventh or eighth man and I continued to work hard and do what I could to contribute to your team regardless of what spot I was in but that didn't seem to matter to you that I was not your best player on the team, you knew I tried.
Sorry Coach
I knew that year that I was unable to come to summer camp I would be questioned by you
"Why are you not at summer camp?" Coach asks
"I have to work now to help pay for food for me and my mom." I respond
Sorry Coach
And even years later being the grown and successful man that I am, I am here to tell you that all of the excuses were never my fault. I am here to apologize for all of the excuses throughout my life and tell you the real reason I could not make it to practice, why we did not have food on our table, why we did not have a vehicle to get me to practice, or even why I could not afford the participation fee to play the sports I loved.
"I am late and can't afford things because my mother is drunk coach and I had to help her before I could leave the house every day for practice or camps."
Sorry Coach
