Being in a sorority for such a short time has already taught me so much and has helped me create long lasting friendships. But ever since I even told my friends that I was eve considering rushing, I had gotten drilled with the 'stereotypes' that surround sororities and Greek Organization. And here is a list of what I've been told and how they just aren' true.
1. "Sorority girls are just paying for friends."
This is absolutely not true; people in Greek Organizations are the most social people I've ever met and don't even think that we need to pay for our friends. We can make a million friends with or without money, but we prefer the friends we make within our sisterhood/brotherhoods.
2. "All girls in sororities do is party."
Excuse me, but how can you make such a broad generalization about such a massive group of people? And no, we don't just party and act like wild women all the time. We actually do things to better our community and ourselves.
3. "Sororities aren't professional."
Already I have had to dress in more business casual attire than in any other point in my life. So please, explain why we are considered 'unprofessional'.
4. "Sorority girls just sleep around."
1. What ANY girl does with her body is NOT your business. 2. Anyone that says and believes this is just ignorant.
5. "Why would you sign up for that? You're going to get hazed."
Unfortunately, this is still a problem, but I know that the Greek Community is avidly working to spread awareness and bring this issue to and end. I know that the Greek Organizations at my school have a strict No Hazing Policy and every organization bands together to bring light to this subject and spread awareness.
6. "Sorority girls are just preppy, spoiled brats."
This stereotype irks me SO bad, what anyone's monetary situations entail are absolutely none of your business. But I know plenty of girls that cover sorority dues completely by themselves and are not all from a gated community and drive a Mercedes.
Sororities, Fraternities, and other Greek Organizations constantly face the ridicule of stereotypes placed on them by society and the way that Greek Life is portrayed in movies. But these stereotypes just don't hold up and don't change how happy being a part of my sisterhood has made me. Greek Life is not for everybody, but for some, it is life and it makes them happy.
