What Does It Mean To Be A Good Sister in Your Chapter?

Not one sorority at any university across the nation is the same. We are all different, and each of our chapters offer something different to our members and PNM's. During recruitment, each chapter looks for the best women who will fit the values and ideals that the sisters in that chapter live by. We look for women who we believe would be a good sister and women who we would be proud to have wear our letters. Here's a few things that chapters look for when they are looking for a good addition.

They look for someone who is going to be active.

You probably already know that joining a sorority is a huge commitment. It isn't like joining another random club on campus that meets once a month. Most chapters meet weekly, have mandatory philanthropy and service hours, and lots of fun events that you would want to attend! Things will come up that cause you to miss events and that's okay—life happens, but don't join something that you don't have any intention to give your all to.

They look for someone who has good time management skills.

This goes along well with being active. You need to have good time management skills in order to get the most out of your experience. Knowing how to effectively schedule your homework, classes, studying, and still having time to have a social life and have fun with your sisters is important. A good sister won't blow off events because she habitually forgets about her physics homework. She will have already completed her homework, studied for her test, and had time to make it to a Greek fundraising event. Life in a sorority will never be boring—you will probably always be busy, and if you're not you're probably not giving it your all.

They look for someone who is kind and respectful.

Even if you have differences with another girl in your chapter you still need to know how to be kind and respectful. We don't need women in our chapters that are full of drama and malice. We need women who are smart and who have new and inventive ideas. We need women that will carry on our legacy in the future. Treating everyone with kindness and respect will go a long way.

They look for someone who is invested in something more than just themselves.

Philanthropy and service is a large aspect of being in Greek life. A good sister in a chapter will be passionate about something other than herself. Our passions are what make us special and valuable. Being passionate and driven makes you stand out. Whether you are passionate about curing cancer, art, volunteering, music—whatever your passion is, you bring something to the chapter, something valuable.

Whatever sorority you find yourself in, know that the women in that sorority saw something in you. They thought that you would make a good sister and addition to their chapter. So be active, be passionate, and be a good sister. How much you put into your chapter and your sisters will be how much you get out of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
