When entering college as a new freshman student many things rush through your mind. “Will I like my roommate? Will I avoid the freshman 15? Can I survive in a shoebox sized dorm all year? And of course, will I actually find a great group of friends?" One way to settle this unsettling though of meeting a completely new friend group is sorority recruitment. It sounds cheesy, I know. But from personal experience I know it’s an amazing choice. I couldn’t have imagined (or made it through) my freshman year without my amazing second family.
1. Even if you don’t decide to join a house, you still meet people
Recruitment opens so many social doors for you. And even if you decide not to join a house you still made a bond with the girls in your recruitment group. They are some of the first people you meet on campus (if you decide to go through recruitment) and they are going through the exact same situation as you. Who better to befriend?
2. Your social skills skyrocket
After 3 days of nonstop talking about yourself as well as what you are looking forward to in your freshman year, you realize talking to people (especially girls who are actually interested in your life) is not difficult at all. You will leave recruitment weekend confident in your ability to start up conversations with new people and no longer fear social awkwardness.
3. It gets you out of your dorm
The many charity/philanthropy events don't just help build your resume, but it also gets you up and out of your dorm room. You are able to meet people from different houses and expand your horizons. The year becomes more fun when you're able to share it with not only your house, but others as well.
4. You stood out! Be proud!
The girls from that house specifically chose you to be a part of it so don’t be intimidated by them. They picked you out of the bunch because they felt as though you would fit in there. Which is great! You also have your whole pledge class by your side. They are in the same shoes as you, get to know them and I can guarantee you’ll have a great freshman year.
5. You literally gain 100 new sisters/friends
After your house has been chosen, you literally have a whole other family. The girls from that house specifically chose you to be a part of it. You have a place to go when you're stressed about school or going through a hard time. The best thing is they are the last people to ever judge you. They’ll listen to you, give you advice, and even just eat ice cream with you all day to help get you through a tough time.
