What My Sorority Means to Me

Greek life is full of opportunities.

What My Sorority Means to Me
Andrea Mazzola

Sorority life comes with a lot of judgment. Long before joining a sorority, I heard the stereotypes and assumptions of sorority girls. I decided to ignore these judgements and go out for recruitment to see for myself what sorority life was all about. I learned that being in a sorority is about way more than parties and status. Sororities are so much more than pink letters and pretty pictures. A sorority is a chance to help your community, while making lifelong friends in the process.

Growing up, I always wanted a sister. Now I'm fortunate enough to have over 100. Sorority recruitment was such an enlightening process for me because I was given the opportunity to meet tons of girls just like myself. When I went through recruitment, I never thought I'd be so lucky to end up in a place with some of the most amazing girls and some of my new best friends. Being in a sorority is about sisterhood. My sorority gave me a sense of belonging and acceptance. You build friendships with girls that'll last a lifetime. You create a bond like no other with these girls and they become not only your sisters, but your closest friends, in no time.

The recruitment process alone exposes you to so many different girls inside and outside of your sorority. I was able to make so many new friends and learn about so many new people. Through recruitment, I was able to find which sorority was truly for me and where I felt I belonged. Now I have developed friendships in such a short amount of time I value more than anything, and I am lucky enough to be living with my closest friends.

My sorority has provided me with endless opportunities I couldn't be more grateful for. Greek life allows you to build strong friendships while doing good in the process. I was able to develop and strengthen my friendships all while doing community service for our philanthropy. Events like Dance Marathon and Derby Days are inspiring and life changing events to be a part of, and the best part is you get to do it with all of your sisters. To me, being in a sorority means working hard to make a difference and to support your philanthropy. Whether you're in Greek life or not, you have the opportunity to make a difference. Being in a sorority has pushed me to get more involved in my community by allowing me to do it with all of my best friends, which is something I had always shy'd away from before.

Being in a sorority has helped me grow into a better and stronger human being. It's a life changing organization with endless opportunities that brings loads of experience. I joined a sorority with a cause important to me and I couldn't be happier with my choice. The most rewarding feeling is knowing I am helping a wonderful cause while doing it with my best friends. I am eternally grateful to be surrounded by such powerful and passionate women every day of my life. Greek life has allowed me to blossom into the person I am today.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
