Sorority Life Is No Laughing Matter

Sorority girls often receive a bad reputation in popular media, but the good parts of greek life are often overshadowed by the bad.

Greek life: you either love it or hate it. I know for a fact that there are girls counting down the days until Ole Miss rush begins, but at the same time there are those who see no point in the entire system. Sororities in popular media are often deduced to terrifying headlines that warn of tragedy connected with hazing or party culture. They are compared to cults, and are portrayed as self-centered, well off, and alcohol infused party girls in movies and TV. It seems that there is often little light shed on the good things that sorority life has to offer.

There are plenty of positive parts of sororities that are often overlooked. Philanthropy events earn thousands of dollars for worthwhile causes such as Service for Sight, Make a Wish, and Children's Miracle Network. Without the money earned by sororities paired with volunteer hours in many cases, most of these organizations could not succeed.

Almost every sorority has an average GPA that members must uphold. This helps keep members accountable not only for themselves, but for the good of the chapter. Some houses even offer free tutors and help facilitate study groups between members.

Greek organizations give unique opportunities for leadership and can actually help you build your resume for a future job. There are many positions and committees that allow women to step up and be in charge of events or projects. Your sisterhood could even have the potential to lead you to connections with future employers.

One of the main issues that critics push is the cost involved with taking a bid. The average dues for a Freshman's first semester at Ole Miss is

$1,870. When you look at how the price breaks down to cover meals, house fees and supplies, parties, and sisterhood activities, its hard to argue that it is too much for the experiences that individuals receive. Every good organization needs money to function efficiently, and dues are just a part of it.

Of course it is easy to point fingers at stories of hazing and binge drinking as a reason not to join, but in many cases these organizations are highly regulated and have many rules they must follow. Most cases of hazing are simply one person in a chapter who takes things too far, which makes the entire greek community suffer the consequences of their actions.

Sorority life is not about "paying for friends" or being part of an exclusive group, its really about having a positive group of people to encourage you and give you a home away from home. From the outside looking in, its easy to judge and make jokes, but sororities are no laughing matter. They are more than just the headlines you see on the news and are more than the stereotypes, they are a way to gain unique life skills and friends that carry you through your college days.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
