Here at FSU we went through virtual formal recruitment a last week, and each chapter welcomed home their new pledge class. Virtual formal recruitment was the first of many things to be affected by COVID-19. During formal recruitment, we were on Zoom all hours of the day talking to 60 potential new members per person that week. It was hard to not be able to interact with the potential new members, and not have them see our sorority house. Not getting the full experience makes their decision that much harder. Although virtual formal recruitment was tiring, and difficult, it was that much more rewarding to meet all the potential new members, and welcome them home on Sunday.
As we are only in the first week of school, there have already been numerous events held by students that are violating CDC guidelines. Because of this, the university has made strict policies to only allow events with 10 people at most. With these guidelines in place, sororities will have to make a big transfer to Zoom to hold meetings, and possibly events. This year will look very different than in years past.
While being on Zoom will not be what we expected, this will be a great opportunity to allow the members in sororities express their creativity, and problem solving skills. As things are constantly changing, members need to keep up and change with the guidelines, and rules. This year will be very collaborative in creating new ways to bond within each chapter, and effectively communicate with their members.
While social, and philanthropic events may not be able to be held, members will be able to get creative and find ways to continue to support their respective philanthropy, and having social events for bonding. Whether it's raising money online, or having a Netflix watch party, each sorority will be able to watch their members face the adversity of COVID-19, and come up with ways to make this year memorable.
