Social media portrays sorority girls in dresses, hugging one another in cute poses. I was skeptical about Greek life coming into college, unsure if I would find a home as a "sorority girl". I can now say it is one of the best decisions I've made in college. There's more depth to being in a sorority, including the following:
There is a substantial amount of academic support. Often, movies portray sorority members as girls who don't care about their GPA. That has not been my experience in a sorority whatsoever. I have a support system of friends to help me study and maintain a high standard with my grades. In my sorority, we are assigned "academic bigs" who are older mentors that have the same major, and they help with questions about courses, what professors are preferred, etc.
In addition, philanthropic work is one of my favorite parts about being in a sorority. Every Greek organization is tied to a philanthropy organization that they support. There are events held to raise money for an array of worthy causes. This also gives women opportunities for leadership and backing causes that are important to them. Not only am I able to attend events for my specific chapter, but I love to support the other Greek organizations on campus, as well.
Being an only child, I had a hard time with the concept of having 100+ "sisters". I've never experienced one sister, not to mention dozens. However, all that changed when I joined my sorority. I now have countless sisters that often feel like actual family. We share clothes, laughs, tears, experiences, and I can't imagine my college experience without these friends.
Joining a sorority allows girls to meet new people and have a support system unlike anything else. If you, too, are unsure or skeptical about joining Greek life, I encourage you to give it a shot!
