With recruitment week in full swing at my sorority, I have been feeling very sentimental, especially since I am a senior this year and will be graduating in May. These past three years have been a whirl wind of various emotions and events but I wouldn't trade them for anything. Joining my sorority has helped move and shape me in more ways than one. The funny thing about all of that is the fact that I was the last person people would have ever expected to join a sorority. I guess you could say, I am not your typical sorority girl.
My story starts out my first week of college. I went to a university where I knew absolutely no one, my first week of college I made one really close friend. This friend, thankfully, dragged me to sorority recruitment. I was bound as determined to drop recruitment after the first day, the only reason I did it was to please my friend. I was not the type of person who really gets along with girls. My best friends my whole life have been guys. However, after visiting the second house, which just so happens to now be my sorority, my attitude changed. I walked in and met a girl who had the same name as one of my best friends back home. This was comforting to me because I was feeling very home sick and beginning to worry that I had made a big mistake moving as far away as I did. I like to think that was a sign that I had finally found my place to fit in.
On Bid Day I got to run home to about 100 new sisters, something I have never had before. Being in a sorority I gained a new perspective on life, learned how to let loose and have fun, and how to really be there for someone in their time of need. I do have to say, the biggest thing I have gained out of being involved in Greek life is the friendships. I have fostered many amazing relationships with those who are not only in sorority life but in fraternity life as well. We are such a strong group of people who are determined to make a change and to make something of ourselves.
I like to believe that if I had not gone through sorority recruitment I would not have met my best friend in the entire world. We grew up on opposite sides of the country and our sorority brought us together. She is now my little and pretty much my literal sister. We fight and argue, we laugh, we cry, and we get on each others nerves. But, I know at the end of the day she is going to be my life long friend. I also know that I will have a million of people attending my wedding (if/when I ever get married) because Greek Life has given me the opportunity to branch out and forever change my life.
