The stereotypes of sororities and fraternities are fun and easy to make movies about, but are they accurate? I will agree that there are aspects that I can see in each chapter, but the extreme to which the stereotypes take them to are flat out false. Here is a public service announcement to set the record straight.
People think we party nonstop. We actually can’t have parties in the sorority houses, and have more rules and standards than people think. If we do something that does not hold up to our standards, we get into trouble, so most nights we watch Netflix.
People think we are sluts. We actually are classy. Girls that live in the house aren’t even allowed to have boys in their rooms. Sorority girls represent their whole chapter and bad reputations spread quickly, so girls avoid doing anything that is not honorable.
People think we are ditzy. We actually have GPA requirements. To be in a sorority, you have to meet a minimum GPA.
People think we pay for our friends. We actually pay so we can be a recognized organization and come together in a common goal. Sororities have four pillars: scholarship, service, sisterhood and leadership, so yes we value our sisters, but we do not pay for them. Gaining friendships is just a bonus!
People think we are stuck up. We actually do philanthropy for various causes that are dear to our hearts. The majority of our work is focused on raising money or awareness for our philanthropy causes.
People think we don't like eating or that we have an eating disorder. We actually love food. Eating should be the fifth pillar of sororities.
People think we hate other sorority chapters. We actually love each other. Pan love, am I right?
People think we wear oversized t-shirts too often. We actually do.
