With the first week of school coming to an end and a new one quickly following, it seems as if the days are melting by and the workload is heating up. With readings, papers, and upcoming lab work, it seems that there's never a moment to just sit and rest. Not to mention the other responsibilities like laundry and cleaning coming in with a hint of homesickness. It could be a lot. In moments like these, music is the ideal way to calm down and focus on your work without having to worry about procrastinate.

Money Rain Down by Big Black Delta

From their album Big Black Delta this song has both the intensity of electronic music and the slight pop of alternative. Whether you're taking a break from writing a paper or fleshing out ideas for one, this song can evoke any creative thought for your nighttime cram session. A witty and touching set of lyrics, there is little to worry about when listening to this song.

Northern Downpour by Panic! At the Disco

Straight from Pretty.Odd, "Northern Downpour" just makes you feel instantly calm. Despite it being slightly elegiac, there are enough beautiful lyrics to tear you away from any stressors of your day. Brendon Urie's voice tells of a tale where despite missing how things used to be, it doesn't mean that you can't feel your emotions as they come.

Dead Rabbit Hopes by The Shoe

From their album,I'm Okay, this song brings about feelings of self-acceptance and the ability to calm down without having to divert your focus away from anything in the moment that's making you sad. For almost five minutes, the piano notes along with the abundant floral imagery from the music video is soothing and lovely.

The Love Club by Lorde

Off of the 2013 album,Pure Heroine this song might bring upon some nostalgia for easier days in early high school where your work wasn't an all-consuming job, or it might just help you focus on your work. Either way you can manage to do some thinking for the night that isn't on the idea of work, or what's making you stressed...or just stress in general.

Sweet Child O' Mine by Taken By Trees

From the Life As We Know It (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) album, this cover of the iconic Guns N' Roses song is a softer, lighter version. Any distressing deadlines or homework assignments can be managed with the help of lead singer, Victoria Bergsman's voice.

Ultimately, these songs can act as a coping mechanism when things are becoming too overwhelming to really hone your attention on. While they're not a permanent solution, they can in fact, be an aide in just a moment of calm.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
