People will always say "listening to depressing songs while you're in a bad mood will only make you feel worse" and to that I say, GO BIG OR GO HOME. When I'm upset I don't want to listen to All Night Longer by Sammy Adams, even though it is a really good song and gets me and my friends pumped up at frat parties. Let me sulk in some Ed Sheeran, Adele, and basically the Glee version of ANY song for the time being. If you find yourself in a rut and don't have the incentive to pull yourself out of it, here's some music to your ears.
1. Dream - Imagine Dragons
This song goes out to all my high school seniors, or anyone whose about to enter the 'real world' and has no f*cking idea what to do.
We all are living in a dream,
But life ain’t what it seems
Oh everything’s a mess
And all these sorrows I have seen
They lead me to believe
That everything’s a mess
In the eyes
Of a teenage crystallized
Oh the prettiest of lights that hang the hallways of the home
And the cries from the strangers out at night
They don’t keep us up at night
We have the curtains drawn and closed
Some of us are, actually, living in a 'dream' so to say. The song insinuates being sheltered at home by 'drawing the curtains' and ignoring screams and terror in the real world. Listen to this song if you wan't to ignore the fact responsibilities are approaching fast and get some sympathy that even FAMOUS MUSICIANS know how you feel.
2. Twin Size Mattress - The Front Bottom
Boys suck, one more time for the people in the back: BOYS SUCK
She hopes I'm cursed forever to
Sleep on a twin-sized mattress
In somebody's attic or basement my whole life
Never graduating up in size to add another
And my nightmares will have nightmares every night
You don't need to get over it right away. Like the song suggests, wish for him to have a twin sized mattress for the rest of his life; just to fit one person. Because if he can't have you should he have anyone?
3. First - Cold War Kids
This song was personally here for me through a very hard time. Hearing it now made me cringe so hard I almost fell to the floor, but it's a tear jerker
Cheated and lied, broken so bad
You made a vow, never get mad
You played the game, though it’s unfair
They’re all the same, who can compare?
First you lose trust, then you get worried
Cold War Kids beautifully touch upon unfaithful relationships. They describe the dating scene as "playing a game" and vouching for it as everyone being the same. If you find yourself being cheated on, listen to this song and cry - then get the hell up.
4. Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You - The 1975
Matty, the singer of the 1975, wrote this song about his parents splitting up and him not being able to watch his younger brother because he'll be on tour.
I preferred it before
We should ring dad more
Lost our house
Hold me close
I stopped by, just to wash my clothes
I know it's me that's supposed to love you
And when I'm home you know I got you
Is there somebody who can watch you?
We've all experienced guilt in our lives, and sometimes there is just nothing to do about it but listen to some music and shed a few tears (I use 'a few' lightly, you'll get it when you hear this song).
5. Cough Syrup - Glee Cast
STRICTLY the Glee version.
If I could find a way to see this straight, I'd run away
To some fortune that I, I should have found by now
And so I run to the things they said could restore me
Restore life the way it should be
I'm waiting for this cough syrup to come down
Blaine sang this song when David Karofsky tried to kill himself because he and his peers couldn't come to terms with his sexual orientation. The song is extremely powerful and talks about what pushes people over the edge. The strong may be triggering for some, but it is truly beautiful.
All in all, listening to sad music when you're sad is only going to put you in a deeper slump. On the contrary, we all need to let ourselves have a good cry every once and a while and these five songs will do it for ya! But, when you're done make sure you wipe the mascara off your eyes and continue being the bad b*tch you know you are.
