Sometimes Things Happen

The odds aren't always in our favor, but that doesn't mean they'll always be against us.

Sometimes Things Happen

Life can be hard; some are blessed with good luck and fortunate, others struggle to obtain and/or keep hold of that good luck, and some people alternate between the two. No matter the person, we all experience times where it feels like the universe is against us. Those times may last a day or two, but sometimes it feels like it's been a lifetime. How ever long that time may be, it always comes to an end. Although sometimes it may seem like it, misery and grief are not forever. Life can be hard, but you need to work through the tough times to reach the blissful moments.

I consider myself to be a pretty lucky person, compared to what other people around the world deal with on a daily basis. I have an education, food on the table, a roof over my head, and people who support me. I've had my fair share of troubles- both on a minor scale and a major scale- but that hasn't stopped me from smiling and appreciating all that I have. Granted, I, like many other people, have had times where I was very unhappy, whether it be something in my life or something about myself. But I've always reached the light at the end of the tunnel.

To those reading, I'm sure you can relate in some way; whether you've recently experienced the loss of a loved one, or are going through a time in your life where nothing feels right. I can't guarantee that I can completely comprehend your situation, but I can guarantee that you will get through it. The important thing is to keep your head up. Don't let anguish or negativity take away your hope and happiness. Focus on living today, and prepare yourself for tomorrow. Appreciate the little things that give you brief moments of joy, and don't hesitate to seek the support of others.

I understand some people might not believe that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It all comes down to what they've experienced and how those experiences have effected their mindset. But the important thing to remember is that things can always get better. One day, you might meet someone who turns your luck around and fully supports you, or you might be presented with an astounding opportunity. I can't tell you when these possibilities may occur, but something's bound to happen eventually. The world around you is constantly changing- seasons change, people change, everything changes eventually. Change can be scary, but good things can come from it.

Don't lose hope in a better future just because the present isn't so great. Life is full of ups and downs, so all you can do is deal with the bad and cherish the good. Sometimes things happen, and that's okay. Life can be hard, but it can be a wonderful thing too.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
