With the constant hustle and bustle of the world revolving around us, typically having "a lazy day" or taking "a day off" is frowned upon. We keep ourselves immeasurably busy out of fear of possibly missing something important (or what the rest of the world deems important). This explains the constant complaints of "I am so tired" or "I am too busy" that hinder us from participating in activities that we enjoy and never seem to have time for.
I am calling it out now: sometimes it is completely OK to be lazy.
The greatest happiness can come from spending a whole day in our pajamas, laying on the couch and binge-watching whatever show is popular on Netflix that week. I enjoy my days of complete nothingness more than days that my schedule is packed with nonstop errands to run. It not only gives me a chance to clear my mind but allows me to relax my body and prepare myself for the packed week I might have coming up.
So take a lazy day.
Have no guilt in finally eating that tub of ice cream that has been in your freezer for the past week, and eat it all–the whole thing. Sit with your dog and enjoy their company for once because I guarantee you they enjoy yours. Stay in bed and have a complete day filled with Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat throughout nap sessions. Walk around with no pants on, singing to the first song on the radio and dancing like nobody is watching. Bake a cake with ingredients you have in the house (within reason) and eat it in its entirety. Go out to your backyard and read your Bible while reflecting on all of the wonderful things God has given you. Call your mom and tell her how much you love and miss her. Finally finish a full game of computer solitaire or online poker. Meditate or do yoga for the first time. Do something that is going to provide you with nothing but contentment.
Although laziness is not encouraged in becoming a lifestyle, sometimes stepping back, taking a breath, and just being plain unproductive can give way to a more successful day or week to come. It is like a study break from life that allows you to empty your head of the craziness and readily focus on the task at hand. This can become the best time to think about a hard decision that you might be having to make, allow you to grow in your relationship with God, or reward yourself for all of the hard work you have been doing.
I am declaring now that is completely natural to take a lazy day. We all need time to ourselves to extract what could become our full potential. So go forth and be lazy.
