Everyone has something to say about the new "Ghostbusters" film whether it's to praise the reimagining of the 1980s classic or to denounce its very existence. Upon the release of the trailer, millions flocked to YouTube to watch and then share their varying opinions on what stars Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig had to offer us. But there is still one thing that many have failed to consider –– something that will likely be a glorious reality this Halloween:
Lady Ghostbuster costumes.
It's no secret that quality Halloween costumes are hard to come by for women and young girls as they are often designed to be "sexy" or "sassy" and hardly ever movie quality. (Don't believe me? The next time you're in a costume shop, notice that men get to be police officers, doctors and wizards while women are very much limited to being sexy police officers, sexy nurses and sexy witches). But is this film what we've all been waiting for? Is this going to change the way costumes are manufactured, advertised and sold to women everywhere?
Maybe this is a little too optimistic, but movie replica costumes are in high demand every Halloween, and this film isn't going to be any different. Women and little girls are going to want to dress up as their favorite Ghostbuster, and they're going to want to wear something that looks exactly like what Jones, McCarthy, McKinnon and Wiig are wearing in the film. And what exactly does that entail? Not being sexualized.
And they're not going to settle for something skimpy and impractical for saving New York from the paranormal. If the costume industry wants to properly capitalize on the hit that this film is likely to be, they'll have no choice but to market costumes that perfectly resemble the film's and, if the costumes are popular enough, this may just begin a domino effect. Women have been demanding for a wider variety of and more dignity in costume choices for years and, because of this film, their voices might finally be heard. Women might finally get to be a police officer and not have to be sexy if they don't want to be.
And just the possibility of that is exciting.
