Let's be honest. The basis of Netflix Originals has been absolutely amazing lately. The love stories covered by, "To All the Boys I've Loved Before," and the heartthrob behind, "The Kissing Booth," America is in love with love.
I personally loved both of those movies and understand why teenagers everywhere are dying over the storylines of both stories. Fact is, these movies are painting a false image for girls and proving a point of the need for a relationship like this.
In comes the new film, "Someone Great," that stars Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, and DeWanda Wise. This film is targeted for an older audience but overall portrays a phenomenal message that is never talked about in films.
Jenny, played by Gina Rodriguez, decides to accept her dream job but in doing this she must move across the country to California. By doing this, she consequently breaks up with her long-term boyfriend Nate Both, portrayed by actor LaKeith Stanfield.
Her best friends Blair and Erin, played by actresses Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise, support her heartbreak by preparing for a concert that night.
There are many reasons why this film is one of the best I have seen in a really long time, especially on Netflix. Fact is, we have not seen a film like this at all and the messages it relays to young women is so powerful we need to look up to this movie.
The biggest reason I think this movie is the best is the strong, diverse female leads in the film. Gina Rodriguez is one of the best actresses to hit American screens in a decade.
She has always shown pride in her heritage, which she should, and that truly shines through in this movie. Also, DeWanda Wise was an outstanding actress.
I have not personally seen her on many other films or shows but I will most defiantly be looking out for her. Her character, Erin, is apart of the LGBTQ+ community. In the film, Erin shows how she truly feels about her partner.
This is something I thought I would never see on a Netflix Original but I am most defiantly here for it and hope to see more in the future. The diversity in the film is most definitely a strong attribute to why I think this film is the absolute best because we simply don't see this.
Another theme to point out is the strong female power. Fact is, we literally have no movies about break-ups and how much they actually suck.
This is bringing awareness to the feelings behind those times and it shows that it is okay to have those feeling but at the end of the day, you have other people that have your back.
This movie puts a lot of emphasis on friends, something that is so important. A lot of girls get so wrapped up in their relationships sometimes they neglect their besties. This movie proves that at the end of the day, those are the people that will stand behind you and support you.
I can honestly go on and on about why this is the best film of 2019, but it would be much easier for you to just watch the film yourself. You will laugh and cry but trust me, this film is definitely worth the hour and a half.
