Everyone has seen a charming, little town in their favorite movie or show and has fantasized about living in a place where everyone knows everyone; well, except the people living in small towns. For those of us who have experienced living in a town where everyone knows your business before you do, it's not so charming. If you don't know whether or not you came from a small town, 1) you probably didn't because trust me, you would know and 2) I'm here to help you figure it out.
Things "small towners" do for fun are very, very limited. Our nearest mall is probably only still running because it has a Target. The only beach we have is 30 minutes away and is also a tourist trap. We have no choice but to make friends from other small towns because we already know everyone in ours and the best text we could receive is one asking if we want to go to Walmart for the 10th time this week. And that's just the start of it all.
Our town may be small but our schools are smaller. Most people consider a small graduating class to be around 150-250 but that's more people than we have in our high school. We pick our prom dates in the second grade and know who our top 5 members of the class are in the 4th. Our science teacher is also the softball coach and our history teacher coaches football. The most exciting thing to happen at school is when they add a new topping to the pizza. While our school pride runs deep, our school funding does not. Information goes through the school faster than the flu and you'll go through more drama in a week than outfits in a year. Even with all of this and more, we wouldn't trade it for the world.
Yes, small towns do have some charm to them, but the line between charming and boring gets very blurred when you live in one. While I won't stop you from fantasizing about living here, just take these things into consideration while you do.
