Remember as a kid drinking out of a Rugrats cup, eating Tostino's pizza rolls and then taking a bike ride with the neighborhood kids?
No, lately it does not seem that this world is as connected as it used to be. More like connected to our iPhones and Netflix to really see the world around you. Just those feelings of walking down memory lane, wishing you were 10 instead of 23. Unfortunately those mornings of breakfast and long bus rides with friends have been replaced with walking 3 blocks at 8 in the morning with a cappuccino in one hand and paperwork in the other.
As a kid who grew up in the mid 1990s, we had those last moments of Kodak pictures, cassette tapes, and a sign of never ending childhood. I will be one of the many who will agree by saying that growing up in that era was fun and the weekend McDonald’s trips and summer breaks were great, but I will play Devil’s advocate though that I feel a few of you will disagree with.
Growing up doesn't need to mean that your world is coming to an end, but rather a new way to change yourself. You can go to college and develop a new identity and actually meet people that become your family. As an adult, there will always be ups and downs but as I have learned just recently that when one door closed, a few more open.
As kids who grew up in the ending of simpler ways and Kodak moments, you can still be the kid that you enjoyed so much being, yet be the adult you need to be. Be creative. Be imaginable. Don't be afraid to show that kid in you. When you lose your imagination, then where does your sense of self go?
Instead of being afraid of growing up, maybe you just need to look at life through a different lens. Being an adult does suck at times, and it has its moments. But you as a human make mistakes, but that doesn't mean your whole world comes to an end and you have to curl up in bed and never come out. Just like Dory says, keep on swimming.
Be the kid and the adult. You don't need to choose.
