Whether you set out to write an essay, a novel, or an article, the possibility of writer’s block is a very real concern. Staring at that blank page? Super intimidating. The worst part is that it doesn’t matter how long you have been writing, there are just sometimes when the words refuse to come. The good news is that there are a few ways that can help the writer to refocus and find their true inspiration.
Most people say that the first step you should take is to take a step back and think about what it is that you are writing. Don’t worry about how to write it, just try to find a way to get thoughts on paper. Any thoughts at all, even if the idea does not make any sense whatsoever. Just write until you move past your quota. Later, you can take the time to arrange your words into cohesive sentences. However my ADHD-riddled brain doesn’t seem to agree with this method, so I have had to find alternative ways to cure my writer’s block.
What I personally suggest would be to take 20 to 30 minutes and do something that you love! Something that gets you up and moving. For me, I can always get back to a paper or project after I have spent some time working out or even just dancing around my room. It doesn't matter how silly it is as long as it clears your head and gets you back in the game!
Once, my friend gave me the suggestion to take 20 minutes and do something to pamper myself. Her theory was that if you did this it would take your mind off of your writing and give you a chance to cool down, also, she said it would leave you feeling great!
The truth is that different techniques will work for different people. Just because you try a technique does not necessarily mean that it is going to work. So the simplest thing to do would be to follow these steps.
1. Breathe, you will get through this eventually, if you have enough determination, then whatever you need to get done will be done on time.
2. Believe in yourself, you have the ability, you just have to take your time and really put your mind to the task.
3. Take it one step at a time. Start with what your topic is and begin doing research on it! Sometimes the more you learn, the more you will be able to write and organize your thoughts. Write out an outline if it helps! write down all the things on your mind and clear out those cobwebs!
The most important step is to find the right technique for you. Think of what calms you down and what helps get you to focus. Once you find out what works for you, you will be rocking around that block!
