After taking a War in Literature class in high school, I gained a better understanding of the tragedy and travesty of war. Though I will never truly understand what war is like because I have never served, I have tried to articulate my interpretation of a night on the battleground.
Sitting here in this darkness
Awaiting light to fend off what haunts us.
Hard, cold medal gripped in my bones
It clicks and thunders with a stranger's moans.
I cannot control the fear that's inside
So I put on a brave face for the man by my right.
We wait out this droning stalemate together,
But in the end we will all reach forever.
I only hope I can be forgiven
For these sins which I have committed.
My family, friends, and God above,
Safe at home, I send my love.
The sun breaches the dreary horizon
With men all over slowly arising.
Trembling, tired, thirsty, and taut,
We know and hope this was not for naught.
For those who have served, continue to serve, and will serve, my sincerest thank you.
