Why do so many people invest hours upon hours into tracking the Kardashians’ every move? It is mostly attributed to how every member of the family has completely opened up their lives to the world. How can you get a butt the size of two basketballs, you may ask? It usually does not occur by any normal workout, but by the magic of plastic surgery and cosmetology. When Kim and Khloé were accused of having butt implants and their responses did not satisfy their critics, they obtained x-rays to try to further prove their authentic gifts from nature. Even then, that was still insufficient; common responses included “the x-rays could have been faked by their doctors” and“How do we know those are their butts”.
Why do we care so much about every detail and crevice on someone’s body? Why is augmentation such a big deal in today’s society? On one hand, instances like the Kardashians sort of brought this upon themselves by utilizing their physical appearance to create a lifestyle and career, allowing the public to access their daily lives. Yet, I can somehow pity Kylie when she finally revealed the reason for getting lip injections.
When I say finally, this tidbit of information becomes interesting because it is private. We intrude on their privacy regardless. Kylie’s reason for wanting lips like those of Lisa Rinna was due to self-consciousness of her lips and believing that boys would not want to kiss her. We can talk about why people should not do things like this, but in reality, the issue lies beyond appearance. The concern is with privacy and the ability to freely mold your body as you please. What someone does should be their business solely.
Why is augmentation such a big deal in today’s society? Why should we feel like we need to keep our procedures a secret or humiliated for having them? People who invest their lives in what celebrities are doing can become hypocritical because a celebrity like Ariel Winter has a breast reduction to lessen pain. However, Winter's reasons do not adequately "justify" her choices and she is shamed, despite that most strangers would also undergo treatments to improve their health.
Years ago, and even still today, nose jobs were 16th or 18th birthday presents for girls who felt like they needed the change. It was not stigmatized in the past, while girls never publicly boasted about their new noses since possessing natural nose is ideal. It does not matter what someone chooses to do as long as the procedure is safe and they are willing to take the risks.
