Society Says Put A Smile On Your Face

They say fake a smile and you will be okay.

The ability not to smile or laugh, is probably the hardest thing in the world. A person can find a million reasons to and the body will not allow you to. People say if you are positive, you can control your mind. I say, take a step in their shoes and see what it is like.

Some days, sleeping all day and not seeing anybody would be the best. But, unfortunately, you have to get up and go to work, classes, etc., life goes on and you cannot stop.

Depression should never be wished upon a person. It takes over your mind and body. A person has no control over how they feel or want to feel. It can almost be like a waterfall. A person one minute can be so high and the next thing they are so low. Sometimes it can feel like you are drowning in your feelings.

When searching for ways to help with depression, one states that talking to a friend, family member, or significant other can help. But sometimes, it can almost feel embarrassing to express to a person what it is that you are going through. It is hard to explain to someone that does not or has never experienced it, what it feels like to have it or go through it.

Some of the best ways I personally have found to help is through exercise. Just by going on a leisurely walk helps. Other exercises help but when in college, sometimes life gets busy and there is not much time. Watching comedy movies on Netflix or people's snap chat stories can also help. Allowing your mind to get off the thought of not being happy helps the mind.

I do not think that mental health is expressed enough. It is not something that is talked about in schools to younger aged people. I believe there should be classes or seminars in the education field for people to go to.

Forcing yourself to attempt at being happy is not always the key to depression. Most of the time it makes it worse, or at least that is the way I feel. Do not try to fake a smile because others say, " Wow you look annoyed" or "Why don't you cheer up."

In my opinion, it almost feels like the society is always wanting people to be happy. We live in a country where everything is endless, dreams, food, love, etc. It seems people around want us to be happy 24/7 because what other emotions are out there? We are wanted to be seen fake sometimes, show a fake emotion at work or at home. Be something we are not. Yet, I feel we should be able to show that we are human and sometimes we have an illness. That illness might not be a broken leg, have the flu, or have a disease. Mental illness is also a sickness that needs to be taken care of like any other illness.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
