Society Doesn't Control You

You are your own person.

Society Doesn't Control You
Kirstyn Conwell

It's easy to fall into a specific pattern of life. You have a certain way you like to do things, and that's it. You know that everyone is okay with it, no one will judge you for it, and it's 100 percent in your comfort zone. For example, the style of clothing you choose to wear always seems to be the same; that's what your friends are used to and that's what you're used to. There are certain things we as people just don't want to change. But why? Why do we always have to be the same? Why is it unacceptable for me to do things that are "out of the norm?" Because society, for a lack of better words, controls us.

It's okay to listen to different music and outwardly express it to your friends and family. It's okay to try out a different outfit that you haven't worn in a while or that you normally wouldn't wear. It's okay to find new friends, new hobbies, or new interests. You are your own person. You don't have to follow what everyone else is doing just to live up to their expectations of who you are. There are so many opportunities for you to be who you want to be and do what you want to do.

Society doesn't control who you are or what you do. Whether you're a male, female, teenager or adult, society cannot physically limit you to what you can do. If you want to become a doctor, become a doctor. Just because there are a small portion of people telling you that you can't doesn't mean you actually can't. They don't get to direct your path. Follow your dreams and put the effort in and you'll surely make it there. Don't let others' doubt consume you. You are so much more than what people perceive you and expect you to be. So go out there and do what YOU want to do. Not what your parents, friends, or teachers want you to do.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
