When We Blame Society, We're Not Off The Hook
Word Press

Society says that women must be able to fit into size two pants, or they must rearrange their appearance. Society says we are not allowed to be who we want to be because it does not fit the regulated pattern followed by those before us. Society says that certain races empower others, when in reality shouldn't all lives matter? Society says that we are, "the land of the free," but we cannot express that right due to the excess involvement of the United States Government.

Society. Society is saying what it always wishes to say. But what even is society? Society is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as, "people, in general, thought of as living together in organized communities with shared laws, traditions, and values."

Americans blame society out of ignorance, because society by definition is not a "what" but is, in fact, a "who." I am society. You are society. We all are society. So when we blame our current issues on this "who" called society, we are really just blaming ourselves. Think about it -- America can fix its excuses by fixing ourselves.

Society says we must all portray the same body image.

Obese women report that only "skinny women" are accepted by society's image. Thin women report that "obese women" declare them as "too skinny" or "anorexic." When in reality, the categorization of both terms "obese" and "thin" have no purpose to exist because society doesn't create them, we do. We have the ability to love our selves the same and this issue would cease to exist. Rather than blaming society, we should blame ourselves because we have the power to fix it.

Society says we are not allowed to be ourselves.

This is a good one. Creativity is stripped from the minds of children at a very young age. They are immediately put on the assembly line of life expecting to follow the same pattern, and share the same ideas. We put things into categories from the start. "Athletes" follow one path. The "nerds" follow another, etc. America blames this system on society from the start when in reality we have the ability to change it. Let young minds stay creative. Let students choose their path of life by engaging them in education rather than forcing it down their throats. Let people become who they wish to become without the barcode of normality. It is not necessary to blame society because we would only be hypocritically blaming ourselves. We can fix it.

Society labels certain races as inferior.

This label is significant to the balance of our country. There are endless debates about race by the excuse of society. In America it is reported that society determines the power held by the races. When in reality we are all people with thoughts and motivations. We are people with families who share love. We have the ability to change this issue by advertising that all lives matter. Rather than blaming each other and the past, we can change the present by not blaming society and fixing the issue ourselves. We are the faces of society so we have all right to resolve the issue.

Society says the government has too much power.

Abraham Lincoln stated in the Gettysburg Address, "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth." We blame society for giving the government too much power rather than giving it to the people. We as individuals are behind the wheel on this issue. If we want the government to have less control of our decisions, then we as people must make it that way rather than giving the blame to "society."

Blaming society for our social pressures is America's greatest excuse. But if you think about it -- society does not even exist. It is a term we have created to describe our own minds. We are individuals who have the power to change the view of the world around us.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
