Put Down Your Phone And Make A Real Connection With Others

You must make the radical change to live in the moment rather than through an iPhone.

Everyone is making New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and to get healthy with their bodies. I want to make a New Year’s resolution to get healthy with my mind. I can’t get rid of social media altogether but not going on social media and spending more time off my phone, in the present and with my family, is something I absolutely can do.

Social media takes away from the "now," and how we are enjoying the moment we are in. I am guilty of going on social media when I am out to eat with friends and I can tell that it takes the moment of being with that person away. I am sure it makes the person I am out with seem like they aren’t good enough. Even going on social media and taking tons of pictures when I am on vacation with my family takes time away from the scenery and space I'm in.

Taking a break from the social media when I am around my friends and family will give me time to fully enjoy the moment I am in and to fully enjoy the people I am with rather than with the internet and my personal networks.

Social media also isn’t good for your mind and how you see yourself. Constantly checking up on what an ex is doing or what other people are doing won’t let you live the life you want. Moving on from people and different things will be hard when social media is the focus of your life. Instead of being jealous of a friend getting a new car, or an ex finding someone new, putting time into yourself and your peace of mind will leave you happier in the long run than you would ever get having more than 100 likes on a picture.

I am not saying social media is horrible and to give it up, nor am I giving up social media for good. I am going to limit my time spent on it. As a kid, you use more imagination and did more things outside and read more books, but in today’s world not having a cell phone and not constantly telling the world about our lives is strange. Families are so wrapped in social media and their phones that no one talks to one another anymore. Sitting down at the table to eat dinner means that everyone brings their phone and that is what they concentrate on.

By putting down my phone and living more in present, talking to my family and friends will give me peace of mind and more happiness in the long run. In my opinion, that is the best New Year’s resolution for everyone out there.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
