I am as guilty as anyone else. When the world delves into dark places, I switch channels, scroll to the next post, or click on a different article. In this era of social media, we are flooded with a constant stream of information that can be good or bad. We would like to say this keeps us well informed, but let's face it, we all would much rather read about what happened at the Grammy's than about what happened in Kabul.
Kabul is Afghanistan's capital as well as its largest city with a population upwards of 36 million people. As January came to a close, it would be an understatement to say that the new year is not looking good for the city. In recent weeks, Kabul has faced a rise in terrorist attacks from ISIS and the Taliban. This rise is caused by a campaign of violence on the U.S.-backed government.
Taliban claimed responsibility. The Taliban also claimed an attack on the Inter-Continental Hotel the week prior. The hotel assault lasted 12 hours killing 22 people including 12 foreigners.
I was shocked to see little coverage over these terrorists attacks in the recent weeks. However, the articles over whether Kylie Jenner is pregnant or not were endless. It served as a reminder that if we want to stay informed in this age of social media then we have to actively seek that information.
The news we see on our accounts is that selected by algorithms or covered by the media seeking views. Do not believe that everything is fine simply because it did not appear on Facebook or Twitter today.
