We've come to view social media as a regular, everyday necessity. If you don't have a Twitter, you're missing out on the new Internet joke, spreading like wildfire and starting a trend. If you don't have Instagram, you're missing the latest photo your friend's posted, the selfie your favorite celebrity just revealed, anything that'll cause an uproar. All these forms of social media have helped us evolve, learning new ways to communicate, to promote and to express ourselves.
Embarking in the Twitter universe has taught me a lot about the idea of exploiting it to its fullest. People can make lifelong friends on any type of social media, sharing similar passions and values. Another thing it's taught me is that the desire to hate is that much stronger.
The anonymity behind a computer screen can make the idea of hateful words towards someone easier. What used to be a safe space for many fandom Twitters has become almost an obligation to the person they admire. It shouldn't be that way, it should be fun.
Social media can be toxic. We find ourselves comparing ourselves to others, wishing we had the lives of someone we follow on Twitter or Instagram just because they share a couple cool photos, making it seem like their lives are picturesque. Truth is, people reveal only what they want everyone to see on social media. So when they show off their brand new clothes or the expensive trip they took in the Bahamas , just know their lives may not be as untouchable or perfect as it seems.
A hateful atmosphere ruins the ultimate vibe of the original Twitter world. What used to be full of love and accepting people, has become just any regular social media site. Completely consuming yourself with every social media site becomes scary, you feel inadequate to everyone and sometimes anyone just needs a bit of a break.
Twitter's devoted to certain celebrities are truly dedicated, making it difficult to fully remove yourself from the situation.
There's many things social media has done to improve our quality of life but it can get toxic quickly. You just have to remember to take a step back and breathe. Remember it's just a website and there are other things in the world to worry about
