It's 2019 and technological advances are at an all time high. Modern technology has been exponentially growing at an uncontrollable rate where we are unable to forecast future potential and growth. This being said, the vast technological development has led technology and social media to become deeply intertwined in our culture today. There is never a day spent where we don't indulge in social media, play on our electronic devices, or read about advancements in technological fields.
This being said, Social Media is not a force to be reckoned with. Technology is not an independent force, but a dependent one as humans are the ones who operate and decide how it is used. This in turn means technology is reflected in who we are and what we choose to do with the power we are given.
There is this concept of the hedonic principle which is essentially the idea that we are "always on the hunt for that next thing that'll make us feel good, [so] it's almost impossible for us to just be". As humans, we are never fully satisfied with the present. Happiness is rarely fully attained along the lines of social media which causes us to struggle with purpose and identity outside of our virtual world. In this regard, social media has not proven to be the issue, but the way we abuse our access to it. We use it as a vice for this deep longing of becoming our "virtual" better selves for others to see. Social media taps into our insecurities and internal conflict and sweeps these issues under our screens rather than addressing them. It is so much easier to hide our problems under the virtual profile we have created of ourselves for the world to see.
So when you use Social Media, take each action with a grain of salt. You are more than your posts, likes, and comments and you can find happiness outside of your screen. I know its essentially impossible to believe this during this day and age, but technology can't give you the satisfaction that face to face relationships and the outside world can give you.
