We all love spending time checking snap chat or Instagram and maybe even keeping up on Facebook. But, how much social media is too much social media? There comes a point when people cross the line of oversharing; do we really need to know what color socks you're wearing today, Robert? In all seriousness, it's time that we reconsider this whole trend, and think about how this is affecting our lives.
Social media is beginning to target a younger demographic and poses potential dangers. This is specific to mental health, and overall well being. Is it really healthy to feel like it almost necessary to check your phone every hour, or even more frequent than that for some? Or to have to check your Instagram notifications before you even brush your teeth? There comes a point when we need to realize what we are prioritizing in our lives.
So many ideas are manifested through social media; everyone seems to be living the perfect life, have the perfect body, and have everything figured out. Yet, we all know that the realities behind most of those pictures are something far different. Yes, we know not everyone is living the fantasy we all think they are. Somehow we all still manage to put that rationale aside and believe otherwise.
To be completely honest, who really cares if you've snapped someone or 638 days? Congrats?
We're being programmed to feel like we need these apps like they are essential, but they're really not.
Maybe we need to spend a little less time being consumed by the things we see online and start to enjoy the things around us. Still feel like you can't bring yourself to delete Snapchat? Even turning off my notifications has drastically decreased how much time I spend on social media. Or, even putting all of your apps into a folder so that they're not the first thing that you see. Instead of looking up pictures of sunsets on VSCO, go watch a sunset. Don't snapchat yourself baking a cake, just bake the cake. There's a big life out there to live; don't forget to look up sometimes and take it in.
