Why I'm A Social Democrat In 500 Words Or Less

We aren’t lazy or communistic, we just believe society can do better for regular people.

Why I'm A Social Democrat In 500 Words Or Less
Time

Several days ago when I walked into the break room at work there was a box sitting on one of our folding tables. It was for a canned food drive for the local food bank. This is a great cause as no one should ever have to go hungry. In these moments I often reflect on the notion that something like this has to be necessary in the wealthier country on the planet. As a social democrat, I believe there’s no reason anyone in this country should have to go hungry and that it is the moral imperative of society to make sure no one does.

Social democrats believe a lot of things, but we aren’t communists per se. I am unashamed in admitting communism is a great idea in theory, but isn’t practical in its implementation. Therefore within the framework we have now, I believe in a capitalistic market, but with heavy consumer and worker protections. I believe every set of workers should have the right to organize and collectively bargain for better work conditions.

I believe no one in this country should have to choose between their health and putting a roof over their head. I also believe there should be no profit motive in healthcare. As a result, most social democrats would tell you they’re in favor of single-payer or universal healthcare. This would be done most easily by expanding the already overwhelmingly popular Medicare program to everyone in the country. Price gouging for medication would also be a crime and advertising for prescription medication should be eliminated as well.

I believe strong public education is the bedrock for an informed society and that voucher programs for schools are detrimental to the education of our children. Every family should have access to universal pre-kindergarten and no one should have to skip on a four-year degree because it is too expensive to go. We should also be providing for the elderly and no family should have to struggle to help pay for their loved ones’ care.

I believe in taxing the extremely wealthy for the betterment of average Americans through programs which help the less well-off. If this sounds like redistribution of wealth, then you’d be correct. The wealthy can continue to live lavish lives while at the same time contributing fairly to society. I also believe in bringing back laws which separate investment banking and consumer banking to avoid financial collapse and predatory practices.

Of course, in 500 words it is hard to write out an entire ideological manifesto. The basic philosophy behind these beliefs is the idea that many of our ills could be fixed if we worked together collectively. Certain things like food should be guarantees and institutions like health and incarceration should not be for profit. Untethered capitalism is designed to push people down and while movement is not always bad, there should be a certain floor under which no one should be allowed to fall.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
