We Are The Social Change

People have come, people will come, people we are...

We Are The Social Change
Since 1997

People are often asked the question, “What do you want to do in life?” The answer— is almost never the same. But innately, we all deprive of a positive change, or to be the positive change. No kid ever grows up wanting to be a mediocre car salesman. We all grow up with big dreams and big goals in our minds. While not all of us will succeed in achieving our childhood dream, many of us will at least try giving a shot while we are still able to.

While we take a look around the world today, and we are able to look around with the help of advanced technology that was once considered impossible. Small mobile devices, virtual and augmented reality, and new possibilities are emerging every minute. While it helped us see, and learn about the people and their lives across the world, it also revealed to us the bad and the uglies we tried to ignore. Poverty, war, corruption, and violence, are all just few of the many problems that exist in humanity today.

Now every child in this world grows up seeing and learning about these problems. Those problems they have been revealed creates a new mindset in these growing minds. To create a social change, or to live in the dark like the rest of the adults, we all have to make a choice while we are blessed with time we have.

Children are pure and they are naive, and maybe, that is the reason why they are so brilliant. A friend once told me, “If you listen closely, what the children say actually make a lot more sense. And if you listen closely, what politicians say actually don't make any sense.” Yet time after time, we tell these kids what can and cannot be done, while we continue to listen to adults who fail us. It becomes easier to believe in the things that seem impossible, and it discourages us. Our dreams become so distant from our reality.

The atmosphere around us today is sharper than ever before. Nations are in turmoil, and we are walking over thin ice. We have listened to politicians for so long, telling us that they will make a change. However, no change they ever made would ever dodge the result they have brought us today. We live out today with our heads under cover in fear of what comes tomorrow. Our minds have been ragged, and we are fatigued from each other.

Yet, constantly, these innocent, young, and naive children have big smile on their faces. It’s as if they have it all planned out, and no endeavors that may come their way is a worry to them. They believe that they could change the world one day—and I started to believe they will because I was once a child.

To look back at our history, to see how far we have come, and to see how far we will go, we look at the people around us. Our parents and their parents who have enjoyed the endeavors of life. Our little siblings and other children will bring life to the future generation after them. And then there is us. We are the generation of the present. It is our time to make the change for us and those who come after us. Our parents will look at us and be proud, and our children will look at us and aspire. The old has gone by, and the young has yet to come, so it is us that live today.

We listened to the world that has come before us and they have taught us their mistakes. We learned and moved on. Now it’s time to listen to the generation that is yet to come because they are the true visionaries of this world. They are the ones who will live out the changes we make today. Once they have lived, the cycle of life and innovation will continue so that one day they could be the next social change.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
