They’ve given you Boeheimian Rhapsody, SU State of Mind, and The Sound of Mayfest. This year, HumorWhore, the Syracuse comedy group that makes “weekly sketch comedy videos for your comedic G-spot”, (there words not mine, Mom) released their latest music video: Sober. Based off the insanely popular song Closer by The Chainsmokers, takes you on a journey through the typical college drinking culture. HumorWhore’s, Ricky Miller, and DG Sorority sister, Danielle Harris, lent their vocals to this over the top parody.
The idea to base the annual music video on Closer came in early October said Andrew Bishop, editor of the film. The idea was Julia Teti’s, associate producer of HumorWhore and a sister of Delta Gamma as well. The next step to making this idea a reality was getting the lyrics down, which took three weeks. “That beginning part was a lot of meetings,” said Eric Hill, assistant editor of the video. “There were a lot of technical things that were discussed like making it visually appealing and funny.”
The shooting of the film was next and took several weeks. It was extremely important to HumorWhore to have as many members in the video as well as shooting at familiar places around campus. Many of the student’s favorite spots were covered like DJ’s, the new promenade on University Place which has been facing a lot of scrutiny as many believe it was overpriced, and BBB, what The Chainsmokers is referring to as “Boulder” in their song. Yes, The Chainsmokers, the world’s hottest music group made a Syracuse reference. Andrew Taggart, one of the two members of the group, graduated from the Bandier Program at Syracuse as well as being a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
The video was released Sunday after a huge social media hype. At the end, it took approximately seven to eight weeks to make a nearly five-minute video. Something a lot of people don’t know is how long it takes to make a video. Editing took weeks and wasn’t finalized until days before the launch. In that process, the editors made sure different jokes were being made and not repetitive, a frequent thing to occur in pop songs.
I don’t want to give away anything about the video; however, it is truly hilarious. You will be laughing the entire time watching the drinking culture on college campuses and seeing your favorite spots being covered. Unlike other HumorWhore videos which are usually Syracuse geared, Sober is open to viewers on other college campuses as the theme is more general.
