Soar, Prosper And Be Great

The start to my senior year

The campus of Morgan State University flourished as it welcomed new freshmen, with signs posted along the campus that read “Welcome Class 2020.” Meanwhile other students that are already familiar with the campus, went along with their day and campus festivities.

All students returned to campus the week of Aug. 22 to kick off the fall semester. Many students were happy and excited to reconnect with their friends whom they have not seen all summer.

The start to my senior year was a success! My day started with work and ended with my first night class, which was Broadcast News Reporting and Writing II. That class was exciting because my professor had the class do an icebreaker assignment to focus on what makes a good and bad professor based on college experiences, to get to know the students better. It also was an eye opener to the professor to know what to expect this semester from the students.

Once the assignment was finished, we took the rest of the class time and paired up with another classmate to shoot a 30 second video to capture new things that have changed around campus since the spring semester. It was a chance to practice posture as an aspiring anchor and videographer.

On Aug. 23 the School of Global Journalism and Communication welcomed their students to a "Major Fair" with donuts, coffee, and juice. Throughout the day faculty and staff sat at a table on the first floor to speak and meet with students concerning those who are still in need of scheduling. Their building flooded with students going and coming from classes.

It was the second day of the week, and I had my first and only morning class of the day. This semester I will be gaining more knowledge of the production side, taking courses to reflect how to produce my own radio and video pieces. This will be good for me, being that I am a broadcast journalism major.

By Wednesday, it was midweek and time for my internship class. Being that I am a Content Creator for The Odyssey Online, I am able to partake in it. I like writing content for The Odyssey because it allows me to speak through my writing to reach people of all ages and around the world to let my voice be heard. This past summer, I have been able to learn about myself as a writer and come up with ideas to shape my own version to tell a story based off many that trend daily and globally.

I feel that my last year of college will be successful and I will prosper. When I reflect back on my very first day of college as a freshmen, I had no idea of what I wanted to do. After much time spent with changing majors, I am glad that I decided to stick it out. Now that I have grown more, I am confident in facing my daily challenges, because I know that every experience is key to the future.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
